How can I obtain a copy of a certificate from an institution which is no longer in business?

I attended classes in a business institute over 20 years ago and need a copy of the certificate as proof of my attendance. The institution is no longer doing business. Is it possible to obtain a copy of the certificate and if so, how?

If you have no records, it is possible that the state department of education [or whatever it is called in the state where the place was licensed] has some records. You may be SOL, though.

Try the state first before giving up.
