A friend and I want to kind of run a computer repair shop from our house. Nothing big, just running on word of mouth. Do we need to have something special to do that?

Because the laws vary I would recommend contacting your local chamber of commerce. They should be able to help you and/or direct you to who can. They are also a great resource for people starting up a business.
As note, my mom gets all her computer repair work done by a guy who does all his work from out of his house. He gets her business because he picks up and delivers her computer when it needs fixed.
